You asked….we listened!

August 24th, 2016 by Beth A. Lewis

Do you wonder if Augsburg Fortress listens to the requests of our partners in ministry across the Church?

We do!

We love how you are successfully using the resources we create. We love to hear what would make them even better in your context. And, we love to deliver on those requests when we are able to do so (but, like all organizations, we have limits to our human and financial resources, so can’t do everything everyone asks of us!)

But, I have great news for those of you who use our very popular worship planning resource! A number of you have asked that we not only offer our current format 4:3 aspect ratio for content to be projected on screens, but that we also add an option for the wide screen format, 16:9 aspect ratio.

Great news! You asked….we listened!

Beginning this Advent (November 27, 2016), all of the weekly PowerPoint slides available for download from (based on the lectionary readings and designed to complement our print bulletin line) will be offered in both formats! You’ll see these uploaded to starting on Tuesday, September 6.

Something for you to look forward to in your worship planning after you return to work following the Labor Day weekend (or Labour Day weekend for our ELCIC friends).

Enthusiastic Little Sister!

August 23rd, 2016 by Beth A. Lewis

Based on my experience in my role as Grandma Beth, I know that little brothers and sisters not only learn by following what their parents say and do, but are even more inclined to enthusiastically mimic older siblings! I received a cute email and photo from my friend, Sue Edison-Swift a couple of days ago. Three year old granddaughter, Sally, opened a box and excitedly exclaimed,”I got a BIBLE just like Walter!” It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Sue went on to share that “Walter, who will turn 5 in October, loves his Whirl Bible. The storybooks have all been read twice. Such a big hit!”

Thanks for passing on this terrific photo and story of siblings learning to read and love the Gospel together, Sue!

Are there little Sally’s and Walter’s you think would enjoy engaging and age-appropriate books and Bibles like these?  If so, you should encourage your congregation to sign up for our free Sparkhouse Family Book Fair! Registration ends September 21!

Free Shipping on “Prayer Book for the Armed Services” Expires July 31!

July 28th, 2016 by Beth A. Lewis

For the past several months we have offered FREE SHIPPING on orders of 12 or more copies of Prayer Book for the Armed Services.  But, time is running out! The deadline for ordering copies and receiving the free shipping is Sunday, July 31!

At the end of June, I had the great privilege of attending and presenting at the annual ELCA Federal Chaplains Education Training event. This year’s conference was held in San Diego under the theme, “Healthy Chaplains, Healthy Chaplaincies,” with a mission to connect chaplaincy health, fitness, and well-being with effectiveness as a federal chaplain. Within my presentation, “Called to Serve: Vocation and Professional Development,” I shared current research on professional development, along with ideas for resources that can assist chaplains and the women and men they serve.

One of these resources is our Prayer Book for the Armed Services, published by Augsburg Fortress in 2013 and commended for use by action of the Church Council of the ELCA. I was delighted to learn about how the people of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Palm Desert, CA caught the vision of how this little book might be used.

Sensing a need among military chaplains, St John’s began raising funds to provide chaplains and members of the armed forces with copies of this Prayer Book. As awareness and support of the cause grew, St. John’s raised enough funds to send 300 prayer books to an air force base in Texas. Individuals and families bought copies to send to their loved ones—both those in active duty and veterans.

This was on top of other orders placed by St. John’s! Altogether, they have sent over 600 prayer books to service men and women and veterans across the country!

Pictured below from left to right are: Ruth Allen and Judy Burke from St. John’s; Navy Chaplain, Captain Russell P. Graef, CHC, USN, from Chesapeake, Virginia; retired Army Chaplain, and now Pastor of Our Savior in San Bernardino, Pastor Scottie Lloyd; and Bishop Murray D. Finck, Pacifica Synod and outgoing ELCA Federal Chaplaincy Advisory Board member.
