Amazing comments from kids on re:form!

May 21st, 2012 by Beth A. Lewis

Late last week, I received an email from Julie Aageson, Director of the Eastern North Dakota Synod Resource Center. She had received the note below from Pastor Trichelle Kirchnwitz, who serves at Trinity Lutheran Church in Forman, ND. Here is Pastor Trichelle’s note, shared with you with her permission….bold highlighting of the kids’ comments are mine:

“I have heard that you like to get feedback on different materials we are using in our congregations.

This year, we used the re:form Confirmation curriculum for all three years of our confirmation program (7th, 8th and 9th grade years). It was a huge success! The kids loved it. Perhaps the best evidence for its popularity with the kids was comments like, “Are you sure we have to be done for the summer? Can’t we keep going?” and “If we need to be done for the summer, can we start earlier in the year next year?”

I found it to be very easy to prepare and because the kids were excited about the material, I never felt like I needed to try and “sell” it to them. The activities are very creative and the kids loved them.

The material itself is very open-ended. It asks a question each week and encourages kids to wrestle with different issues of faith. This kind of format led to many different questions from the participants and I am confident they came up with questions they wouldn’t have otherwise.

I can see where it is not for everyone. It is not Lutheran specific and so it is rather light on the Catechism (no 10 Commandments, etc.) and is much different from “Here We Stand” or other similar curriculums.

Overall, I feel that exposing kids to different faith questions and providing a space for them to wrestle honestly with those questions is invaluable. We will definitely be using re:form again.

This “review” got to be a little bit long, but if there are any other questions or points I can clarify, pleae let me know.

I hope you’re doing well and able to enjoy the weather!

In Christ,
 Trichelle Kirchenwitz”

It just doesn’t get any better with kids than comments like that!

Blessings,
Beth
