Resources for Discernment

February 21st, 2009 by Beth A. Lewis

On Thursday, the ELCA churchwide office sent out two press releases of note. One was called ELCA Task Force Releases ‘Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust’ and the other ELCA Task Force Makes Recommendation on Ministry Policies

The next few months will be an important time of conversation, prayer and discernment prior to the August 2009 ELCA churchwide assembly where these recommendations, will be discussed and voted on by the voting members.

One of the important contributions that we think that we make in this church as the ministry of publishing is to publish resources that are helpful in these conversations and in individual and community discernment. While we offer many different resources to assist, one in particular has been especially well received over the years. Written by Dr. Craig Nessan of Wartburg Seminary, a popular teacher and speaker, Many Members, Yet One Body: Committed Same-Gender Relationships and the Mission of the Church, has proven over the past several years to be a helpful resource for people throughout this church who want to engage in mutually respectful conversation.

Another book that has also proven helpful for discernment and conversation is a collection of articles written from varying perspectives by teaching theologians and pastors from around the ELCA and edited by Dr. Jim Childs of Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Faithful Conversation: Christian Perspectives on Homosexuality.”

Praying for peace, grace & understanding,
