Pacifica Hospitality and Servant Marketing

March 29th, 2008 by Beth A. Lewis

Greetings from the Pacifica Synod of the ELCA! I have spent the day with about 35 congregational and synod leaders today. I was invited to speak to them on the topic of “Servant Marketing.” It was a dynamic and energizing group of people. The group included Bishop Murray Finck, members of the Synod staff, pastors, lay leaders, and someone from the ELCA campus ministry at San Diego State University.

We had lively conversations about strategic marketing planning, developing a tactical plan, and use of the web, email, and text messaging for communicating with various constituents, both members and non-members.

One of the most exciting parts of the day was that we were the very first group to use their beautiful new office space! It is truly spectacular! A fountain to remind us of our baptism as you walk into the courtyard. A labyrinth in the courtyard. Lots of light streaming through the windows. Beautiful mission-style cherry furnishings. It’s wonderful to see a first class space for doing God’s work in this part of the world! There is even a mini-Augsburg Fortress book and resource display and sales area in the space!

While most of the day was spent on helping these leaders think about how to use marketing techniques in service to proclaiming the Gospel in southern California, I also was able to share with them some of the exciting resources that we are developing at Augsburg Fortress. We talked about how having a dynamic faith formation program for children, youth and adults is of central importance in conveying the message of the love of Jesus. To that end, I encouraged them to check out the free trial offer we have for Akaloo.org and to sign up for one of our free webinars. I also shared with them the exciting work being done throughout the ELCA around the Book of Faith initiative. And, as a sample of the ways that we use the web for marketing, I encouraged them to check out (and sign up for) our free eNewsletters.

I will have the privilege of being back in the Pacifica Synod in May as the ELCA’s churchwide representative to their synod assembly. In that role, I will be leading another workshop sharing the goals and forthcoming resources for the Book of Faith initiative.

If you will be there, you’ll know who I am….I’ll be the one in the spiffy new Pacifica Synod baseball cap, a gift given to me today by the Bishop!

Blessings,
Beth

We had an excellent time and deeply appreciated the opportunity to have a day for lifelong learning as our first event in our synod’s new Lutheran Center for Mission & Learning. The event was sponsored by Preparing Adult Lay Leaders for Mission and Ministry (PALLMM), a ministry of our Pacifica Synod. What an honor to have Beth Lewis as our first guest and teacher!

Thanks, Gordon and all….it was great! to be with you! And, as a bonus, since I was already in southern California, I had the great pleasure of driving to San Diego yesterday morning to worship at Christ Lutheran Church. Lovely, rich worship combined with a warm greeting from Pastor Erin Martinson in their beautiful worship space. I especially enjoyed seeing the mosaic with the River of Life meandering out of it and through their sanctuary. Of course, it was a tough choice since Pastor Dan Raaen had so graciously invited me to worship at their “Beach Church” in San Clemente on Sunday morning. Next time! Blessings, Beth
