Prepublication pricing for Evangelical Lutheran Worship

July 29th, 2006 by Beth A. Lewis

Most people are thrilled by the opportunity to have a prepublication price on Evangelical Lutheran Worship pew editions. This core resource for ELCA and ELCIC worship has been five years in the making….a remarkable partnership of people throughout the ELCA and ELCIC! The pew edition (and some of the other items in the family of resources) will be published on October 3, 2006. All orders for the pew edition placed on or before October 2 are eligible for the pre-publication price of $17.50 USA/$21.00 Can per unit. Once the book is published, the price will be $20.00USA/$24.00 Can per unit. A few people have questioned why we are offering this prepublication price.

Prepublication pricing is a common practice in the publishing industry for core resources or reference books for which a strong initial demand is expected.

The decision was made to offer a prepublication price on Evangelical Lutheran Worship in order to help us in managing our first print run needs. By knowing as early as possible what the demand will be, it helps us as the publisher to exercise wise stewardship and gain cost efficiencies for the first print run…..those savings are being passed along to congregations for making those early decisions.

For those congregations who want to review the content of the new pew edition of Evangelical Lutheran Worship, final proof pages of the liturgies, plus a finalized hymn list in worship book order has been posted for review on the Renewing Worship website.

Never before has the church had the opportunity to view and review so much of the final content of a worship book before it was published! One of the many advantages of new technologies being used to proclaim the Gospel, much as Martin Luther used the new technology of the printing press 500 years ago!

We have done everything in our power to keep the pricing for this worship resource as affordable as possible. Even at the full list price of $20 per unit, it is remarkable when you compare it to small, popular fiction in paperback that will be read by most people only one time. I often find that I am spending $8 to $10 for such items. The economics of publishing require us to pay close attention to the costs of the development and production of our books and other resources for the church. I am very proud of the work that my colleagues in our production and purchasing departments to do control our costs as paper prices, fuel costs for shipping, etc. continue to spiral upward.

If you have questions about such things as pricing, etc. please don’t hesitate to ask! We’ll do our best to answer your questions.
